Late 2009, the state of Hawaii reduced the number of public school instructional days due to budget cuts. The current 161 days of classroom time is now the lowest in the nation. This is bad policy and a poor decision by those involved. This poem is about the now infamous Friday Furloughs.
Will we continue this devastation
Of our children's education?
It's kind of funny
they say we'll save money
as education weakens each month.
Less time to learn
More time to burn.
Is the loss of mind stimulation
worth the anticipation
of more money for government?
A decision gone bad
Much more than a fad
Parents should be mad.
Tell me, who is glad?
Did we put our children first?
Or did our minds burst?
To allow this happen
And share it with the world.
Our leaders are gone
No where to be found
Waves keep crashing
Education drowns.
The window is barely open
This experiment can be reversed
But if we don't act real soon
Time to call the hearse.
